The short answer
- Lake Geneva is under two hours from downtown Chicago without traffic, about 105 minutes; Wisconsin Dells is close to four, about 225 minutes to Kalahari.
- Lake Geneva suits couples, golfers, wedding weekends and anyone who wants the water without a waterpark; the Dells suits families and youth groups.
- Lake Geneva works as a day trip from Chicago; the Dells, with close to eight hours of round-trip driving, really needs a night or two.
- For a weekend at one resort, book a one-way ride up and a separate ride home; keep a car by the hour only when the day has several stops.

Lake Geneva or Wisconsin Dells weekend: side by side
Both trips leave Chicago to the northwest and cross into Wisconsin, but they are different distances and different kinds of weekend. The times below come from the same routing runs as our route pages, without traffic, so add time for a Friday evening exit from the city.

What Lake Geneva is good for
Geneva Lake has about 21 miles of shoreline, and a public shore path of close to 26 miles follows it through Lake Geneva, Williams Bay and Fontana. Early settlers set aside a strip of the shore for public use, so the path crosses private lawns; walkers are asked to stay on it. It is the free, defining thing to do here, and it can be walked a section at a time.
Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, east of town, has 36 holes on two championship courses, The Brute and The Highlands, and in winter its Mountain Top area runs 21 ski runs on more than 30 acres. On the west end of the lake, The Abbey Resort sits on the water in Fontana. From May through October, Lake Geneva Cruise Line boats leave from the Riviera Docks downtown.
Because it is close, Lake Geneva works for a single day as well as a weekend. From Barrington it is about 55 minutes without traffic, which is why so many northwest-suburb wedding parties hold the rehearsal dinner in Chicago and the wedding on the lake.
What Wisconsin Dells is good for
The Dells are a waterpark town. The Wilderness Resort runs four indoor and four outdoor waterparks with an 18-hole golf course; Kalahari pairs a large indoor waterpark with a convention center; and Noah's Ark is an outdoor park of about 70 acres. Indoor parks keep the Dells a year-round trip, while the outdoor parks are summer business.
There is more than water. Dells Boat Tours runs the Upper Dells trip on the Wisconsin River from just beyond the bridge in downtown Wisconsin Dells, through the narrows and past rock formations such as Chimney Rock and Romance Cliff. Downtown is about 15 minutes from Kalahari without traffic, so it fits between two days at the resort.
The drive is the cost of all this. At about 225 minutes from the Loop and 225 from Naperville, it is a half day each way once you add a stop, so treat the Dells as an overnight trip at least.
Families going to the Dells also travel heavier than couples going to the lake. Swim bags, a cooler, a stroller and a change of clothes for everyone add up quickly, so count them as bags when you book. An SUV takes 6 bags with 6 passengers; two families sharing a Transit Van for 14 split the cost of one vehicle and still have room for the gear.
When each one is at its best
Lake Geneva is a summer and early-fall place first. The cruise boats run from the Riviera Docks from May through October, the shore path is at its best when the lawns along it are green, and the golf season follows the weather. In winter the town is quieter, and Grand Geneva turns to skiing at Mountain Top, with three chairlifts and a terrain park.
The Dells split the year differently. The outdoor parks such as Noah's Ark are summer business, while the indoor waterparks at Kalahari and the Wilderness keep the resorts busy through the winter, school breaks included. A February weekend in the Dells is a normal family trip; a February weekend on Geneva Lake is a quiet one.
Whatever the season, the Friday drive out of Chicago is the slow part of either trip. Leaving before the afternoon rush, or after it, saves more time than any choice of route, and a Sunday checkout around midday usually beats the evening traffic back into the city.
A transportation plan for a group trip
Group weekends go wrong at the start and the end, not in the middle. Count heads and bags before you choose a vehicle, set one pickup point in Chicago, and book the ride home at the same time as the ride up.
For a Lake Geneva wedding, the plan has three parts: guests brought up from Chicago or O'Hare on the arrival day, the couple and the wedding party moved around the lake by the hour on the wedding day, and everyone taken home after checkout. O'Hare to Grand Geneva is about 85 minutes without traffic, short enough for one shuttle to meet several flights.
- Count people and bags, including coolers, strollers and golf bags. Up to 6 with 6 bags fits an SUV; up to 14 fits a Transit Van or an Executive Sprinter.
- For a team or a school group, ask for a quote on the 28-seat mini coach or the 56-seat motor coach.
- Pick one pickup point in Chicago, or no more than two, so the departure time holds.
- Plan one rest stop on the way to the Dells; Lake Geneva usually needs none.
- Book the ride home for checkout time, and send the resort name and the guest count with it.
- If the group wants to move around once it arrives, add an hourly block for that day only.

Hourly, or one-way up and a return booking
There are two ways to book a trip like this. A one-way ride is priced from pickup to drop-off before you book. Hourly service keeps the car and chauffeur with you, with a 2-hour minimum and unlimited stops in the service area. The right one depends on whether the car would spend the weekend parked.
For a resort weekend, two one-way bookings almost always win: nobody pays for a car that waits two days in a resort lot. Hourly makes sense for a day trip to Lake Geneva with a cruise and a dinner, or for a wedding day when the couple and the guests move between the hotel, the ceremony and the reception.
| Trip | Book it as | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A weekend at one resort, either place | One-way up, one-way home | The car is not idle for two days |
| A Lake Geneva day trip with stops | Hourly | The chauffeur waits at the docks and the restaurant |
| A Lake Geneva wedding | One-way for guests, hourly on the day | Arrivals are simple; the wedding day has many legs |
| A Dells day trip | Hourly, if at all | Close to eight hours of driving leaves little time there |
| A Dells team tournament | Quoted coach, one-way each way | One vehicle, one schedule, bags included in the count |

So which one should you choose?
Choose Lake Geneva for a short drive, a lake to walk around, golf or a ski day, and a wedding or anniversary weekend. Choose the Dells when children are coming and the waterparks are the point, and accept the longer drive as part of the trip. Either way, the transportation is simplest when the group rides together in one vehicle and the ride home is booked before anyone leaves.
Some groups do both in one long weekend. The two are far apart, about 145 minutes and 122 miles from downtown Lake Geneva to Wisconsin Dells without traffic, so treat it as two trips joined in the middle: one night at the lake, then the Dells, and a single one-way ride home to Chicago at the end. Tell us the order when you book, and each leg is priced before you confirm.
